Materia is a physical theatre performance that explores corporeality, a central nexus in human existence.

The performers blindly reach themselves into the floor, walls, ceiling, and other surfaces, they play and engage in ritualistic or joyful dances, bend to clean the stage floor, pose to embody images of desirability, and walk across the space in a seemingly endless iteration of the course they are set to cover.

The material body and the ideal body are inseparable - and in our performance their relationship is subject to play; the body exists as a physical organism, but it gains its social and cultural meaning through the interests that social structure and ideology place in it. The performance is wordless physical theatre on a theme too conceptual to be depicted directly - so we must trust in the value and aesthetic of a body in action.

"The body is presented through its grotesque aspects, as matter to be used for different purposes."
- Jussi Tossavainen in Helsingin Sanomat (full review)

About the Company
Teatteri Naamio ja Höyhen is a Helsinki-based independent professional theatre group working in contemporary and experimental theatre. Our aim is to study various traditions and approaches to theatre and performaning arts in a continuous search for new possibilities for us and for audiences. Contemporary physical theatre is a central field in our work.

We think that each performance should be based on its own particular working philosophy and aesthetic, for which reason we do not attach ourselves to any aesthetic program. Instead, we often use differences and even oppositions in order to find the best approach. Challenging the conventions in arts often also goes together with challenging social themes, as it may be difficult to separate the form of a performance from the world view it proposes.
