NORDIC CULTURE CENTRE FOR YOUTH
AND CHILDREN
(pictures are lay-outs)
The Pegasos theatre wishes to increase cultural offerings for youth and
children not only in terms of domestic production, but in terms of Nordic
co-operation. There is an evident need of Nordic cultural exchange in the
bilingual city of Vaasa. The purpose is to organize the exchange of performances,
artists, and exhibitions between the Nordic countries.
A prerequisite for the realization of the plan is a small-scale
cultural centre that would be located in Vaasa. The centre would function
as a coordinating link between Nordic art societies, art schools, and artists.
The culture centre would provide the region with dance performances, puppet
theatre, interartistic exhibitions, and installations, for example.
An essential part of the operation of the centre would
be the organizing of small-scale touring exhibitions, training events, and
performances. Customers could, for example, book an exhibition or other happening
coming to the centre to their own school or other premises. The culture centre
would also handle the advertising of upcoming events as well as organize tours.
Another essential part of operation would be the maintenance
of two guest ateliers. In addition to artist exchange and performance production,
also training premises would be provided cooperatively with other Nordic countries.
Financing of the project and personnel involved
Paula Blåfield, the artistic director of the Pegasos Theatre is responsible
for planning the project. Initial capital for the project comes from the
FIM 40 000 grant from the Finnish Cultural Foundation. The grant has rendered
it possible to begin developing the idea of a culture centre.
Possible main financers of the project would be the Nordic
Council & Council of Ministers with its separate organizations and the
Culture 2000-project of the European Union. Support, financing, and cooperation
discussions will also be held with bilateral Nordic cultural foundations,
Finnish cultural foundations (both Finnish and Swedish speaking foundations),
Nordic cooperation organizations, and cultural foundations within the authority
of the Ministry of Education. Partners are also searched for the building
project and the planning of the financing of the building project.
The aim is to organize a workgroup responsible for planning and implementation.
The workgroup will consist of the representatives of possible financers and
support groups and include experts in the areas related to the project.
